Everyone who is familiar with my websites knows how much I love Brooke Galardi of Bee Gee Bags. And I would buy one of each if I could.
So in light of my new hobby – I decided that I would do the next best thing. I’d try to capture them on paper.
What do you think?
My Bag

I also had a couple of failed attempts. I don’t hate them – but they’re not what I was going for, so they won’t see the light of day.
Anyway – these were fun to do, and now I almost (ALMOST) feel satisfied. Nothing really compares to the real thing, but in these hard financial times, we have to make due…
How about you? What do you substitute for your real life cravings?
P.S. Any tips for photography “how to” websites? I mean for people with regular point and shoot cameras. My pretty little pictures look rather sad in the images above…

kate these are fab! i´d love these as postcards! very impressive! my substitute for all things… chocolate…:)p.s. i love scott kelby´s books:)
YEAH! Those WOULD make great postcards. And product hang tags too. Good job!
I think they're great Kate. You're so talented! I think you should open an etsy shop — you know, in your spare time.
Kate, those are great!
You're lucky, I can't draw worth a shit. My art teacher in high school used to laugh at me I was so bad.
Wow! You are really talented! I wish I could draw/paint.
Keep it up!
I love the Brooke's bag with the orange flower. I'd hang that somewhere around here for sure. Sorry to not have photography help, that's my husband's area of expertise. I do know it's all about the lighting.
I think they're cute!! You could make them into girlie notecards. :) Love the colors!
Practice makes perfect. They are nice. All I can tell you from my end is try different settings on your camera or read the manual. I hate doing that so I don't. I just play.
I'm impressed. Most anything I draw has stick figure quality.
Those bags are great too.
It's nice to have a hobby away from the screen, I agree.
Kate-your room mate here…. you continually impress and suprise me even after living with you for 10 years.
I love your drawings! You should frame them for sure!
Oooh, also like the postcard idea! Maybe you could design stationary?
I think you should feel VERY PROUD – the drawings you made are beautiful! And – as if you did not know this – flowers are the HARDEST things to draw and get right – and you have done a wonderful job at your flowers, just perfect! Way to go! :)
Good job, Kate! Love the purses and your renderings. I know there is an art to photographing "products" I just don't know where to research it. Maybe "catalog photography methods"? I do know the really important element is the lighting. Those refective photographers umbrellas? Love you.
My favorite is the one with the upside down orange flower. You have a real talent!
I second the fun postcard idea, or even framed in a quad or collage frame. I love the upside down flower, too.
I also love that you're doing this kind of thing you love. If I could fulfill my cravings, the house would be filled with all the books I love, might love, and will grow to love that'd I'd purchased, but since I can't afford to do that, I'll forever marvel at libraries letting us have books for a few weeks, and enjoy the perks of working at a bookstore, where I can check out new reads all the time. Then I'll dream about being able to write books that someone might want to have surrounding them in their homes.
Beautiful! These would look so pretty grouped on a wall. Etsy shop, anyone??
I just got a new camera but my pics stink. I'd love some pt and shoot help as well.
Photoshop + actions = much better pics. coffeeteaphotography.blogspot.com
Damn, girl, I'm IMPRESSED. If I attempted this, I'd end up with something that looked like a pudding made from wallpaper. Nice work, artiste!
Kate, how are you finding time for this! I would love to do some artsy stuff again, but haven't managed to squeeze in hobby time – how do you do it?
I love that you are doing stuff like this! It is inspiring to me to try to get out some of my long-forgotten artsy talents and see what happens. And your purses really are beautiful! (The drawings, I mean, though the originals are great too!)
Those are great. I am envisioning an Etsy shop in your future.
Some people say scanning works best with artwork rather than pictures. But I hope you find something that helps. I hate photographing my jewerly for that same reason.
Oh my gosh I love that you're drawing the bags in lieu of buying them all. Well done.
I think these are great!!Way to go girl!:o)
Wow. I really like the drawings. What did you use? And what are they on?
I think an etsy shop is your next move. Don't even hesitate for a second. Do it!
You're amazing. I have no idea how you get all this stuff done.
Your drawings are at least as cute as the bags. She should hire you to do promo!
Well, you're a talented young woman, aren't you? Unfortunately, I don't substitute. If I crave Ben & Jerry's, I eat it. Well, works for me, but not for my waistline!
They are lovely works of art you have there, but I was entirely too distracted by the news that you are going to be a SAHM now. (?!) What did I miss and when?
Geez…I need to get my act together.
Those pictures are fantastic. They took me a long time to get through though since my wife was standing over my shoulder squealing, "wait, go back to that one!"
They look good, but I'd say scanner if you can.
Those bags are gorgeous and I think you did a great job capturing them!
I like the post card idea too – or framed as a grouping.
Oh, I wish I had never seen that website, because I totally want that pink poppy bag. And I'm not even organized enough to match my purse to my outfit unless I'm going out with my girlfriends who are that together. I secretly long to be one of those girls!
I agree with some of the other comments that you should get paid to do marketing for the site—I love fashion illustration as an artform. You know Andy Warhol got his start by drawing shoes?!
As for what I do to make do (which is the story of my life, no matter what the economy is like), I substitute a few hours at the shore at the end of the day with my husband whenever we feel like we need a vacation. Since it seems like a real vacation is never in the budget. We call in our sitter and make the hour-long drive, then walk the boards, eat greasy pizza and softserve, and take in the salt air while watching the sun go down. The sitter is the most expensive part of the outing, and it clears out my cobwebs enough to make it another couple weeks until I can do it again.
You did such a great job, Kate! I've seen those bags before and really love them…maybe you intro'd me?…nicely done!
I recently came accross your blog and have been reading along. I thought I would leave my first comment. I dont know what to say except that I have enjoyed reading. Nice blog. I will keep visiting this blog very often.
