Annechovie Print Giveaway on As Good As Cake

Today’s As Good As Cake Holiday Giveaway comes from another one of my favorite artist-bloggers.

Anne Harwell of Annechovie is by far one of the loveliest people I’ve had the honor to meet online.

Her paintings and prints just make me smile – the bold colors would brighten the dreariest of rooms.

Here are a few of my favorite images:

Her 2009 Holiday Giveaway on As Good As Cake will be a Keep Calm and Carry On quote in your choice of the following four colors (aqua, pink, chocolate and china blue):

Monday Muse: Something Musical Even!

It’s been a while since I’ve done one of these… So I thought I’d actually go with Robin’s original inspiration and cover something involving music.

I’m currently caught between two muses: really awful kids’ TV music and the grownup CDs I’ve been listening to.

So first the embarrassing one. This would be The Fresh Beat Band. I have only caught one or two of the shows on Nick Jr. (it must be on when we’re not watching – which would be sometime between 8 p.m. and 7 a.m.) but their music videos play after almost every other show that airs. It’s bad, bad, kiddie crack. And I’ve taken one too many hits…

Should I be worried that I’m only half faking it when I dance with my children to this?

Yeah – that’s what I thought. So I’m going to wash my ears out with the antithesis of happy, snappy kid music.

I’m going with Pink. And she will have to be my savior since the disco and cheesy 90’s dance music that’s been making all too frequent appearances in our CD player when I’m left to my own devices will only get me half way there.

So Pink it is. I think I’ll start with this (said in my best “help me Obi One Kenobi – you’re my only hope” voice):

Sorry it’s not much of a visual – but I can’t embed the actual video. If you need something a bit flashier, go HERE. Either way, that oughta do it….

Don’t forget to grab a button and add your Monday’s Muse link over at Cinnamon & Honey every Monday!

Support the Little Guy This Holiday Season!

Some of my favorite resources for holiday shopping are the online stores of indie designers and artists and small companies.

With our modern day mall-centric lifestyle, it has become increasingly difficult to find truly unique gifts.

Now don’t get me wrong…I’m not knocking the mall. I will never say no to a day of power shopping at the outlets or an afternoon of strolling through patches of skylight sunbeams as I skip in and out of Banana Republic, J. Crew and Anthropologie. And I would by a liar if I claimed to eschew Target. I love Target! (What? I’m a suburban stay at home mom…loving Target is clearly stated in the contract we have to sign.)

BUT more than any of that retail bliss, I love finding a little Etsy shop that feeds my soul with talent and creativity. I LOVE knowing that I own something that’s one of a kind – or one of a few. And I am over the moon to think that I helped boost the business of a small time artist, designer or small business owner.

So I thought I’d try to do just that this holiday season by hosting daily giveaways for the little guy.

I want to help generate business for the people who really need it in this sucky economy.

And I would like to combine that with some free stuff for my readers. Just a thank you for coming by and listening to what I have to say. A little holiday gift from me to you.

These giveaways will be open to anyone. Anyone (but me) can enter. And I still have open spots for new to me artists/designers/companies who would like to do a giveaway (if that’s you, e-mail me at bigpieceofcake@gmail.com).

I’ll offer extra entries for spreading the word through Facebook, Twitter, blog posts and anything else you can do to drive traffic to these vendors and their holiday gift resource goodness.

Here are a few of my favorites that have already confirmed:

Others include jewelry, toys and home products.

All giveaways will be open for two weeks, so you’ll have plenty of time to check in and enter any that you may have missed.

BUT because we’re all busy, I thought I’d offer an easy way to make sure you get at least one entry for all of the giveaways. Post the button below on your sidebar, and you will be automatically entered for each and every one.

As Good As Cake

Don’t do that until tomorrow though as there won’t be anything on the site before then.

Oh yeah – that’s right. I’ll be hosting these on a new giveaways and reviews page, As Good As Cake Reviews and Giveaways. All will be linked to The Big Piece of Cake, but full details will be on the new site. Feel free to check it out. There isn’t anything on it yet, but how about that super cute header? I did that myself via cut/paste and Photobucket. Just goes to show, you can do pretty much anything online with zero html training and limited design talent. At least that’s been my experience.

Anyway – send me an e-mail (bigpieceofcake@gmail.com) if you post the button. I’m closing comments on this one so there is no confusion about where to comment for entries.

Check back tomorrow (Tuesday) for the first giveaway. And start spreading the word. Or better yet – promote some little guys on your own sites. I’ll be happy to link you up here. Let’s help send them as much sales traffic as we can this holiday season.

Because they really need the money for their own holiday shopping at J. Crew and Anthropologie. (Kidding!)

Friday Fiction: What Ivy Was Wearing

Last we left off, Vivi was reminiscing about some friends. Want to catch up? You can do so HERE.

And thinking of what Ivy looked like when they met always made Vivi smile.

The St. Sebastian was a quiet building for all of its 36 personal residences, and it was rare that anyone ever lingered in the lobby. So arriving home from her weekly champagne brunch with David that chilly October day, the last thing she expected to find was a little girl shivering in a bathing suit.

Aaaaaand….that’s my son’s school bus I hear rumbling around the corner. I knew I left this too late today. Shortest fiction post yet. I’ll have to tell the rest of the story next week.

Have a great weekend!

Happy Birthday Little Girl – You are Missed, but Still So Very Much with Us

Today, Maddie Spohr would have turned two. Her parents have been through so much over the past two years, and the loss they suffered several months ago was devastating.

But they’re not grieving today. Heather and Mike are celebrating the very short but very precious time they spent with their little girl. They are also working to bring hope and support to other parents of premature babies through Friends of Maddie.

Many friends of Maddie have written about this, but I think that this post gave very comprehensive information about what you can do to help. So I’ll just send you over there for further details on what we can do to contribute to this wonderful cause and help Maddie’s parents in honoring their daughter today.

Happy birthday and much love to you baby girl. You have given more to the world than you will ever know.

It’s Just Like "Mr. Mom" Except I’m a Girl…

When I became a stay at home mom several months ago, I expected that it would be a hard transition. I mean, I already knew my children. And they have never been an easy bunch.

Now you may be thinking that all kids are challenging and that it’s hard for all moms, and I would say that you are 100% right. But right now, I could kind of care less about any of that. I’m far too busy jumping through my own fire hoops and running my own pee pee scented gauntlet.

My twins just turned three, and I think that’s explanation enough for their contribution the daily chaos. And my oldest isn’t just a developmentally delayed four year old – he’s a HUGE developmentally delayed four year old with sensory issues typically attributed to a toddler. So I spend most of my days chasing a naked three year old with a pair of underwear under one of my arms and another naked three year old under the other, while screaming at a toddler in a six year old’s body to “GET OFF the table, and for god’s sake what happened to your clothes?“

The question that dominates my every second when those monsters are awake: “Why is everyone always naked?“

I do put clothes on them every morning…

Anyway – you would think that after a few months, I would have created some kind of order and structure in our house. I mean, wasn’t that the point of me staying home? To eradicate the misunderstanding that home is a vacation from school and daycare?

But I haven’t.

You often hear the term “insane asylum” thrown around regarding homes with small children. And while it is hyperbole used for effect, I do think it’s kind of accurate.

When my oldest son Oliver became a toddler (a “normal” toddler who had not yet manifested any noticeable delays), I would say that it felt like we were living with a crazy person. He would fly into a rage over the smallest of things. He could go from angelic to demonic at the drop of a hat. And he was a complete egomaniac.

He was a toddler: a crazy person in a tiny cherub’s body.

So none of this anarchy is unexpected. When you give birth to three babies in 18 months, you have to know that you will have three times the amount of id dictating your home life. Your own fertility has committed you to extended stay over the cuckoo’s nest.

And of course I wouldn’t change a thing. I count my blessings every second of the day. But at the end of the day, I do realize that I’m the grownup here and I’m kind of failing.

I’m that mom you see in Target who crammed all three of her children into a shopping cart and is using the under carriage (is that what it’s called?) for the purchases. I’m that mom who regularly hands her kids “forbidden” treats as a means of keeping them quiet, and not as a last resort. I’m that mom who takes one potty user in training upstairs to the bathroom only to find upon her return that an entire room has been dismantled.

I have so little control over my children…it’s almost like I’m a dad sometimes.

And I’m not talking about primary care giver dads. I’m talking about the ones who come home late in the evening after work and really only spend two full days with their kids during the week. The ones who spend most of their daily life on the outside with (for all intents and purposes) sane working professionals who are able to manage every biological function without the help of others. The ones who become completely overwhelmed by the Lilliputian hoard raiding the house and can only hope that the person who “usually handles this,” will arrive in time to help.

But I’m the person who usually handles things. Which is a scary thought indeed.

Just the other day, I left – you guessed it – Target with a cart full of children and no purchases. I made it all the way out to the car before I realized that I had left all of my bags sitting next to the register. So after five minutes of putting shoes back on feet and trying to unwedge my younger son from under the driver’s seat, I finally re-loaded the cart with kids and returned to retrieve my abandoned bags. The cashier laughed as I blindly grabbed for them, apologizing for being so scatterbrained.

She didn’t know the half of it. When we arrived home, I discovered an additional bag that did not belong to me. It was full of cosmetics, and I immediately pictured a woman frantically rifling through her bags in a desperate search for her new false eyelashes. And I couldn’t even rush back to return the bag since Oliver’s school bus was scheduled to arrive in 30 minutes.

I’m a bit of a disaster.

I am also incredibly patient and kind, and I keep emotion out of any punishment that is required. If I yell it is just to be heard over the clamor or to project a very clear impression that I am, in fact pissed. I will always give a hug to a child in distress, even if I really want to stuff them into a suitcase and check them in for the next flight to Peru. I care more about their feelings than I care about my own.

I have no desire to escape. I just want things to be better. I want me to be better.

And I don’t think there is any chance of that happening anytime soon.

Put me in my husband’s body, and I’m Mr. Mom. And I don’t see a Rocky soundtrack montage of me getting my act together anywhere on the horizon.

Maybe I’ll improve over time. Or maybe they will. Unfortunately, there is no crash course in full time parenting.

Every day offers a new lesson. The most recent one being that the next time I use Vaseline on dry skin, I will remember to immediately put it back up on a shelf. Because trying to get Vaseline out of a child’s hair is about as enjoyable as rebuilding a product display at Target while the Dream Team who knocked it over watches from their seats in the shopping cart, eating cookies and guffawing over how that silly woman ever thought she stood a chance…

Fine Feathers

Continuing with my Friday fiction posts… As usual – I’m sitting down with little idea of what I’m going to write. Still with Vivi – but I think it’s time to bring Ivy back in. Let’s see if I can make it happen this week.

I set up a post that consolidates all of the posts so far HERE. So for the sake of context – you may want to read what you missed first.

Of course it wasn’t easy – but it was a start. And then each day, getting out of bed sounded just a little bit better. The world came back into focus and even the sun shone brighter.

Though the latter may have had something to do with finally opening the shades…

Emerging from that cocoon of blankets, bourbon and tears made her feel like a brand new butterfly in truth. A little fragile, but ready to test her new wings. And while corny metaphors typically made her snort in derision, this was the exact image she held in her mind as she walked out her door for the first time since the funeral.

Vivi put a great deal of thought into her choice of clothing that day. She wondered whether she was expected to wear black or gray. Were somber colors still considered more appropriate for a recent widow?

Well screw that. Black was for evening and gray was for secretaries. She selected her favorite teal silk. Paired with matching heels and the pearl cluster earrings Sam gave her for their last anniversary, she was ready. But ready for what?

Having not really considered where she was going, Vivi paused in the foyer to think about that. And a good thing too. The natural light streaming through the front windows had thrown the dark circles under her eyes into high relief. The hall mirror showed her a shadow version of herself that was rather disconcerting.

“Well,” she thought, “that’s what God made sunglasses for.”

She decided to go to the National Gallery. Then maybe she would have a cup of coffee by the fountain.

The idea of being with people, but not having to talk to them was very appealing to Vivi. Regardless of how fabulous she looked, there was still the very real possibility that she might burst into tears, and that just wouldn’t do. She would ruin her makeup and possibly soil her lovely clothing if she cried.

Vanity aside, it was these fine feathers that were holding her together. The thinnest of barriers, her looks were no more than an egg shell. Just one crack, and she might truly fall apart.

She wasn’t ready for conversation. She wanted to be seen, and that was all. To announce her presence to the world at large. That she was back.

And who would have thought that any comeback Vivi Rogers made would be so quiet. Certainly not her. But that’s what it was. A quiet day of walking through galleries and people watching on the Mall.

It was just like any other day. Except Sam wasn’t with her…or there when she got home…or expected to walk through the door in time for dinner…or just on a business trip… That was her favorite one – to pretend he was on a business trip.

These little fancies – pretending that he wasn’t really gone – never did go away for Vivi. It was an indulgence that she refused to give up. Maybe someday. But not yet, and certainly not then.

Back then she had an excuse though. She had to start small. Just leave the house. Think about what to wear. Thinking about how to live the rest of her life without Sam would have to wait until later when she was stronger.

So every day her first thought was about what to wear. Frivolous or not – it was an unconscious morning ritual. Some people had coffee…she had her closet. And strangely enough, clothes became so much more than the beginning of her daily routine. They started her career. They introduced her to some of her most treasured friends. And because of this, the first thing she noticed about anyone was what they were wearing.

She liked to tell this to people so she could see their reactions. Some just chalked it up to her being shallow. Others took it personally. But everyone thought about it.

Ellen was horrified. Nancy laughed. David looked smug. And Ivy had to smile.
