Mullet: A mullet is a hairstyle that is short in the front, top, and sides, but long in the back. The hairstyle was popular from the early 1980s to the early 1990s. Mullets have been worn by males and females. The mullet is distinct from the rattail, which consists of a long, narrow “tail” of hair growing from the back of the head. Mullets also vary in length from side to side and do not necessarily share a single, consistent length.
As I have mentioned on many an occasion, my daughter, Eleanor is follicley challenged. It is only now, at age two, that she has FINALLY started to grow some hair already.
She’s always had very fine blond hair, and I’m sure that if she was my only child, I wouldn’t think anything of it. But she is a twin. And her brother George has had a full head of hair from birth.
Ah – all of that explaining to people that he is not her older brother…”no, she’s not younger – just bald.” Thank god those days are over. As are the days of men seeing me with the twins in the stroller and Oliver at my side, and saying, “three boys – nice work!” (Incidentally – Eleanor was usually wearing pink or leopard print – or something else that no self respecting one year old boy would be caught dead in – but whatever.)

Even as babies – George was able to wear a barrette. Eleanor? Not so much. That one above is literally attached to all three of her hairs. And why would we have a picture that involved George wearing a barrette? I have two words for you: mean grandma.
Unfortunately – this new growth pattern just wasn’t very attractive. Since she always had some hair on the back of her head (I know – cute right?), that pre-existing hair has continued to grow at the same rate as the new hair on top of her head. The result? A bizarre hairstyle alarmingly reminiscent of the mullet.

It’s a bit dark – but truly displays her mullet to best effect.
I’ve never had a mullet or anything resembling one. In general, I’ve had different variations of the same hair style since high school. Albeit, with a few blunders such as perms and fringe bangs thrown in for future blackmail pictures – but never a mullet. No one in my family or Chris’ family has ever had a mullet. And I’ll be damned if my own daughter will be known as the neighborhood toddler with a mullet.
So of course, that means that the day we have been waiting for – for so long (really, really long) – had finally come. Eleanor’s first haircut!
Here are some “before” pictures:

No tears. Pretty impressive considering that her brothers always cry and flail.
The back is now the same length as the sides.

And a blow dry no less! The last time she was in a stylist’s chair with a hair drier over her, she was in my stomach and my water was breaking (ah – memories).

She got to pick out a barrette. But it was too big for her skinny little hairs. Maybe next year.

A lollipop made up for the barrette disappointment. (For me, I mean. She could have cared less.)
Sorry I don’t have any good “after” shots of the back of her head. She wouldn’t let me take any. Scenes from my future as the mother of a teenage girl: “Mom – stop it! You’re so embarrassing.”
I’m so proud of my mullet-less little girl. She didn’t cry or flail and I didn’t leave covered in toddler hair and snot. Maybe I should bring the boys next time so they can watch her work. My little girl took it like a man (a man WITHOUT a mullet).

She looks GREAT!
Meg has the exact same problem and she went along with her Daddy this week to get Erick’s hair cut and Daddy decided that would be the perfect time to get little Meg’s hair cut. Her FIRST hair cut. Did he tell me first? No. Did he take pictures? No. Did he save any of the hair for her baby book. HELL NO!
Does anyone make barrettes for little fine haired girls?
What fun pictures. I’m starting to cut my oldest son’s hair myself! I know, crazy right?
BTW, I’ve tagged you for a meme. Check it out on my blog.
Big Hug!
Your girl looks beautiful! I can’t believe she did so well in the chair!
Both my boys were born with full heads of hair. RC didn’t lose his and as a result, we suffered through the comb-over, rather than the mullet.
I think people did talk. Not to my face, but definitely behind my back.
She’s ADORABLE!! I love it. And, don’t worry. Both my girls went through the SAME thing with the weird hair growth. Now, their hair is long, luxurious, and beautiful!!! (Too bad they’re both bitches…)
Oh for cute! Horray for no more kiddie mullet!
Both Connie and I were born with a full head of pitch black hair, which promptly fell out and then became super fine and fair, just like your daughter.
Lol! Oh, she’s too cute to have had a REAL mullet!
This reminds me of a horror story: My boyfriend once tried to cut his own hair and ran out of batteries in the buzzer before he finished – he’d only done the sides. I’m glad I wasn’t present as he had a mullet for a day or two while the buzzer recharged.
Aww she’s so cute!
LOL. Your posts always leave me rolling in laughter.
Olivia is starting to get a mullet, too. I just want the front to catch up because I don’t want to cut the cute curls. But, since I live in a small, farm town where mullets are STILL common among some “questionable” folk, I think I’ll cut it rather than make her look like a local hillbilly.
I love baby haircuts (and as you know, we have no shortage of them around my place). Too darn cute. Keep holding out hope for those barrettes.
I had the exact same thing happen to me. My daughter spent a few months of her life literally pulling her hair out and by the time her self absorbed mother noticed, tada, look at that mullet. I was so upset about what was going on on the top of her head that I didn’t have the heart to cut the mullet off until some of it grew back. It took MONTHS. Alas, the mullet is ancient history.
That precious girl is GORGEOUS with 3 hairs or 83! Her haircut looks adorable though.
I LOVE the photo of George with a barrette. Classic.
I can’t believe how good Eleanor was for the haircut. There must be a difference between girls and boys. My boys all bit and spit and screamed during haircuts. Toddler Child still does.
Porgie has a mullet too. Except I am not nearly as nice as you, because I refuse to cut it. I am fairly convinced that she is never going to have a full head of hair.
Don’t worry, Kate. I didn’t even have that much (little?) hair when I was 2! Her hair will grow to be beautiful.
Little Girl Mullets are a staple in my house! I can’t cut them, it eventually all works out. But the new ‘do is adorable!
Happy Thanksgiving Kate!
Why is it that people always call then boys when they are dressed in pink? It always seems to amaze me!
I hate the mullett too!
My daughter has a hair swirl in the back of her head and now she wants pig tails and her parting is all over the place.
This post was adorable. Your twins are scrumptious cute. My niece had no hair at all until she was 3 or 4. Everyone made fun of her but now she has hair to be coveted, it is thick and georgeous so you never know!
Oh that is so cute – and I’m impressed that you remembered to bring a camera to the salon with you! Or is that something all moms do and I’ll be doing that in a year or two? Either way – super cute, and hope you guys are all having/had a great Thanksgiving! Christy
So adorable!
The back of her head (pre cut) looks just like my daughters. Except my daughter chooses to remove her hair by creating dreadlocks and then pulling them out.
I am truly amazed at how well she did in the chair. I can just imagine my 21 month old in the chair…not a pretty thought.
AND, you should check out Cinnamon & Honey's post for BPOTW this week. Totally mullet related.
My daughter had the same hair issues. Mostly bald, then some hair in the back, then a mullet. One of the cousins made a quick comment about a mullet and she had a haircut booked the next day.
Great post!
Oh, too cute! I can’t believe you cut it. My daughter has one, too, she’s 2. I want to cut it so badly, but can’t bring myself to. I’ll see if I can muster up the same courage! Your daughter’s looks adorable!
she is so precious!!!
See, Grandma is not mean, just classic!!
The haircut pictures fit into that catagory as well!!
O.M.G!!! What a cutie pie! Love it! And such a good girl to sit there and let them style it with a blow dryer! Most times I don’t have that kind of patience!
The funny thing: I just wrote an entire post about my high school mullet. Some scary times. Still can’t believe it was ever in style!
She looks great and so grown up!
Ah yes, you gotta love the baby mullet. My youngest had one too. I actually let her bangs grow out just to reduce the mullet appearance. She is now happily mullet-free as well. Congrats to you!
p.s. My kids are constantly asking to go get their hair cut, just for the lollipop…
Love that beautiful blond hair. Another milestone down. She was a joy too, my urchins thrash and cry and snot all over the poor hair dresser.
Love the way you told the story with the pics…she is so darn cute!!! :)
