Bad Press Is Good Press

When I wrote yesterday’s post about living big, taking chances and standing behind what I choose to say online, I didn’t expect to be faced with such immediate public consequences.

Before I had a chance to even think about what I would write next, I was given a clipping from a local paper that actually quoted me out of context AND made me sound like a suburban princess.

Every day my husband picks up The Washington Post’s free Express paper and reads it on the Metro. So does a woman that works with him (Hi Alicia!), and she saved us the Lookout Online page from July 30th. We were at the beach that week, but I still tried to get out a quick post (for a themed week of confessions) from the nearby inernet cafe each night. Who would have thought that one of my flaws would be picked up and then picked on.

This particular confession was that I have a hard time remembering to bring my eco-friendly shopping bags into the store, and as a result, have accumulated a bit of a collection.

Here is the piece that was published as part of the “Blog Log”:

I HAVE 20 Whole Foods grocery bags in [my] trunk. I never remember to bring them into the store with me, so I continue to find myself buying new ones. I could just use the paper – but it’s now a matter of principle. That was the point of buying the first one.”

THEBIGPIECEOFCAKE.COM HAS CASH TO BURN NOT JUST ON GROCERIES FROM WHOLE FOODS, BUT APPARENTLY ALSO ON HER BAGS FOR THEM.

This paraphrased quote implies that I have tons of money because I sometimes shop at Whole Foods. I didn’t realize that I needed to clarify that I buy specific things at Whole Foods – not everything. Of course they left out the part where I say, “but when I go to the regular grocery store I use their plastic.” Wouldn’t one assume that calling the other option “regular” means that I go there, um, regularly.

Anyway – to get defensive and overexplain myself would be completely losing sight of my new devil may care attitude toward living online. So I will just say, “thanks Washington Post Express – I appreciate the plug.” Even if it wasn’t accurate.

Excellent attitude. Besides, they were stretching a bit for the snark there! I really enjoyed your last post and the follow up here. I wonder often, since I’ve been pretty open with my identity and my emotions on my blog, how I will react when I hit my first negative experience. I hope it won’t change me, but I wonder.

Aah, it’s still mild. We LOVE Whole Foods, hold your head up high!

Maybe you should write a post about the caviar you buy for toast in the morning! LOL!

Great attitude. Good for you! It seems everyone has an opinion these days even if they don’t know all the facts. People sure can be mean.We also shop at whole foods because my 4 year old has sever allergies to all dairy and eggs. We have to carry an EPI pen on us at all times. Many whole food stores carry more of a selection of foods that are dairy and egg free. We also live on a tight budget and aren’t rich. Great post and thanks for sharing.

    Kate,
You are an absolute wonder to me. It has been such a pleasure to me as your Mom to watch you grow from that wonderful, insightful, funny, kind and loyal little girl who was also scared and for whom everything was “too risky” into this powerhouse dynamo Wonderwoman Supermom “I can
do anything” person you have become.I gave birth to you but you give inspiration to me.

Washington Post Express = TACKY in my book now.

I was going to comment on your last entry and be all supportive and yay for you, but then I’d have to face that I’m a big fat chicken who hides behind pseudonyms on her blog and who only has two people she really actually knows who read it.

You, though. You are awesome. And so is Whole Foods. And so is having way more reusable bags than you actually need. So there.

I love Whole Foods, I love your good intentions in being eco-friendly and I love your anonymous mom! I still think it’s supercool that you were quoted!

Anymommy – I just can't imagine that you could get a negative comment. But then I didn't realize that I would get hate mail for driving a big car….

Suzie – I agree – it did seem mean spirited, mainly because there were something like 4 other blogs quoted and none of THOSE commentaries were snarky. Oh well!

Melissa – You got it – it's all about the positive spin, right?

EatPlayLove – Seriously – I can't imagine what they would have said about me if I had mentioned the 5 course meal I pick up in their prepared foods section every day… In reality – I am usually spending about $30 on liquid vitamins to hide in the kids' food, a bottle of wine, the bag (of course) and a chocolate chip pound cake (I just CAN'T walk by that display without buying one).

Michelle – GOOD POINT! It's not like we all have Mom & Pop health food stores in our neighborhoods. And it's one of the only chains that caters to specific dietary needs.

Christy – Again – thank you for pointing out that not only wealthy people shop at WF.

Mom – What can I say – I love you.

    Ainsley – I know! Right?

Insta-mom – I agree – so tacky! And if it wasn't a free paper I would take a stand and refuse to ever buy it again!

Marinka – I'm feeling very loved right now – thanks for contributing some of that.

Christine – As usual – you get the true point in this. GOOD LORD, I said I had TWENTY bags. Since when did $20 translate into a fortune?

Didn’t I just see on someone else’s blog the Steve Martin quote – “Even bad press is good press.” The Jerk, I think.

I’ve been blogging here in town on the local paper’s blog site, and so far it’s been pretty positive. However, I have my martini ready in case anyone gets nasty!

Your strategy negates the whole purpose of reusable plastic shopping bags. Paper is biodegradable. Plastic bags are not (or not as easily). So continuing to buy plastic bags “out of principle” is a counterproductive, logically fallacious move. Either remember your one bag, or go with paper!
