More Interiors in Art: Page H. Laughlin

Recently, both Table Tonic and coco+kelley featured the work of Page Laughlin. And I was captivated.

Laughlin “examines fantasies presented in popular magazines.” And the paintings are based on photographs from Architectural Digest, Nest and other high end publications.

I pulled the artist’s statement from website, because a paraphrased version would lose too much of the fascinating vision:

I am interested in illusions, in things not being quite what they seem. I am attracted to painting because it allows me to create an illusion and simultaneously reveal the means of its production. Oil painting’s wet viscosity allows for ongoing shifting of structure; it is does not have to be “either/or,” “on/off,” “0/1.” I prefer to use paint to maximize this characteristic – its ability to both make an image and revert to material.

In the subject matter of my paintings, things are often not quite what they seem: lovely interiors, on closer consideration, lead to disquieting seduction; wallpaper details, luscious statuary, give way to recognition of issues of power and subjugation. I try to make work that has beauty to attract and complexity to sustain observation.

I would LOVE to see an exhibition. The texture apparent in the images suggests a very three dimensional quality, and I can only imagine how the scenes would come to life when viewed from different angles.

Sweet Giveaway on Reverie Daydream!

In honor of her birthday month (which is also mine!), sweet Mel of Reverie Daydream is giving away this wonderful set of handmade and signed French Patisserie note cards from her shop:

I have a good feeling about winning this one… But you may as well enter too, you know – just in case.

Speaking of giveaways…today is the last day to enter mine for former Project Runway finalist, Laura Bennett’s signed copy of Didn’t I Feed You Yesterday? Run – don’t walk!

Perfection in Pink and Blue

Remember that scene from Sleeping Beauty when the fairy godmothers are fighting over whether Aurora’s dress should be pink or blue? And then again at the end while she’s dancing with her prince, her dress flashes between the two colors?

That’s kind of how I feel about this (my new favorite) painting by Kelley MacDonald.

I love the colors and I can’t decide which one dominates…maybe it’s like the dress, and the two together are what makes it so extraordinary.

Open the Shutters via Fifi Flowers

One thing I love about Fifi Flowers is that the site is so much more than just a showcase for the work. The lovely, whimsical illustrations are still the focal point, but I find just as many wonderful design photos that make their way into my file.

I was particularly taken with the series of turquoise shutters in France featured in a recent post:

Then of course, we’re treated to some Fifi interiors inspired by the photography:

Love it!

Tea with Dianne Gall

I recently stumbled across the website of Australian artist, Dianne Gall. All of her work is lovely, but I was particularly taken with these teacups:

You may be able to tell from my header that I have a bit of a thing for fine china. And if there is anything that I like better than a pretty teacup, it would have to be a painting of one.

Wondering what to wear to the tea party? Find inspiration in these paintings of party dresses:

Just beautiful.

Tara Badcock Embroidery

I just love Tara Badcock’s work. She’s a textiles artist based in Tasmania, Australia, well known for her beautiful, detailed free-style and hand embroidery:

She has an Etsy shop, and you can also buy some products online at Georgie Love. Read more about this artist and her work on her blog, The Teacozy Revolution, her Flickr photstream, and her website (currently under construction), paristasmania.com.
